Department of Music
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Vivekananda Mission Mahavidyalaya was established at Chaitanyapur in the district of PurbaMedinipur in 1968 with a few departments under the University of Calcutta. In the beginning only local students got themselves admitted into the college. Then, gradually development of the institution took place and the number of students also started increasing. Identifying the interests of the students in Music, the subject was introduced in the academic session of 2005-2006 as a general course. Infrastructural improvements are being made to meet the requisite teaching standards. A post in Music has been sanctioned. There are, at present, two part-time lecturers in the department. Teachers were duly interviewed before 'University authorized selection - committee' before being appointed. Moreover, the departmental lecturers have also performed on the Radio and Television. The university regularly revises syllabus to keep in touch with the recent developments. First, changes were made as per the CBCS curricula and recently, changes have been made in the theoretical and practical syllabus following the NEP curricula.
The department started with only 85 books present in the library. On the request of both students and teachers the library holding has been enriched and currently, the number of books is 400 (approx.). Musical instruments are kept in the custody of the teachers and practical skills are provided under the constant supervision of the instructors. We still depend on the age-old lecture method, but at the same time encourage interactive participation of the student in the classroom. The department plays a very big part in the cultural activities of the college. Group songs and individual songs are sung by the departmental students on social and cultural occasions under the guidance of the departmental teachers. Class tests are regularly held in the department. The internal assessments help the students in their preparation for the final examination. Moreover, due weightage is given to these examinations by the University in the preparation of the final result.
We hope to start an Honours course in Music in the near future.
